"The Music Of The Beatles"
is a "free" online course from the MOOC Coursera - Completed January 2016. If one wants to receive a "certificate of completion" there is a fee of around $100. I did not opt to purchase the certificate. Teacher: John Covach, University of Rochester Eastman School of Music. Covach is a well known rock music historian and also author of the most fun, interesting, and comprehensive "rock music history" book that I have ever encountered which is widely used as a college text in rock music history courses: What's That Sound (by John Covach and Andrew Flory). I actually took a Santa Barbara City College rock music history course that used this book as a text and it really is a great book. Covach is very knowledgeable and I learned a lot. However, I was a bit frustrated by the way he ran the course. In his video lectures, he is reluctant to even quote one Beatle song lyric or play any passage to a Beatles song - for fear of copyright infringement claims. This was way too conservative an approach. What about fair use in an academic course? This is done all the time. Hello? And Coursera can't be blamed for imposing this because they I confirmed directly with them that they do not imposed this policy. It was the decision of Covach or perhaps Eastman / University of Rochester. It was ridiculous and really detracted from the quality of the course. The course ended up being more focused on Beatles history and stories and influences, without digging into specific songs. I still learned a lot but there was zero musical and lyrical discussion and analysis. |
