6TH GRADE REPORT CARDS - TEACHER MISS HANSEN
I can't find my 6th grade report card - probably ripped it up because I remember strongly disliking our 6th grade teacher, Miss Hansen. Monte Vista Elementary was a great school and I loved going there; it was the best elementary school in the Monterey area with a great group of kids, situated on a beautiful hillside neighborhood with a great view of Monterey Bay. I remember every Monte Vista teacher I had as being good at their job, encouraging and generally nice people. And we were so spoiled. For us this era at Monte Vista was a bit of a "golden age" of elementary school - an innocent and a fun learning environment with fun sports and playground activites. I don't remember our classes or the school in general as having any disruptive troubled kids with behavior problems, etc. At least that is my recollection. Maybe I was blissfully ignorant. But I was in the same classes from 1 through 6 with lots of the same kids and have a number of friends from Monte Vista who I'm still in touch with and we all have great memories of Monte Vista. But Miss Emma Jane Hansen was an exception and she is the single only negative memory I have of the school. I remember her as being rather cold, emotionless, judgmental, passive-aggressive and a bit snarky if she was irritated, which seemed to happen a lot. She did not belong in a profession where she was dealing with kids; I don't think she even liked kids but tolerated them because that was part of her job description. And the kids in our class were all the top students and pretty "low maintenance" and she did a competent enough job of helping us advance in reading and spelling and math and geography and social studies, etc with a lot of self paced material. I always liked the Weekly Readers (which I always liked - color coded etc!) where one could read at their own pace and the reading were a lot of fun. But Miss Hansen was the opposite of inspiring or encouraging. I would just call her blandly semi-competent. And on a personal level, I remember not liking her at all and feeling she was kind of a downer to the whole in-class experience. I'm very curious what others who had her as a teacher thought about her, but so far most people who were in my class who I've asked don't have any strong opinion - she is a fuzzy memory that doesn't elicit much of a response either way. So maybe I'm the only one who really couldn't stand her! But I must say that doing this online scrapbook project has called up negative memories of this teacher which I had completely forgotten about! ~DM
