Below are photos of our "Monte Vista Class of 1964" which became the Monterey High Class of 1970. There were four kindergarten classes and three classes in each grade as we progressed from 1st through 6th. Only one Monte Vista class photo is still missing - one of the 5th grade classes.

A special note of appreciation to our 4th-through-6th Grade P.E. teacher and coach at Monte Vista: Donna Aldrete Bua. "Mrs. Aldrete" or "Mrs. A" as we called her, coached our grade level teams* in football, basketball, and baseball and with her help we had a lot of fun and were also able to consistently beat all of the other area elementary schools. She was phenomenally knowledgeable about each sport, encouraging, and good at helping develop everybody's talents; Donna is probably the best coach I've ever had.
Donna Douglas grew up in Carmel and was one of the best female athletes at Carmel High and President of "The Leadership Club;" she later graduated from San Jose State. Not quite sure what "The Leadership Club" was but this resonates; she was an excellent leader. She had just begun teaching at Monte Vista when we hit 4th grade, which is when grade-level sports teams started competing against other regional elementary schools. She taught P.E. and coached our after-school teams for our three remaining years at Monte Vista. We were lucky to have her during that 4th-through-6th grade window; just one year after our 6th grade class "graduated" from Monte Vista, Mrs. Aldrete left to become a P.E. teacher and then Athletic Director at Santa Catalina School, where she stayed until retiring in 2010. So our timing couldn't have been better! Thank you Donna Bua (aka "Mrs. Aldrete") ! ~ Derek Morris

I have great memories of Mrs. Mueller's nursery school, which I attended for two years - at ages four and five. Here is one great "Mrs. Mueller" story that my parents used to love to tell:
One day our nursery school class took a field trip to the Pacific Grove Museum of Natural History on Forest and Central. There were maybe ten of us kids, accompanied I believe by one adult, Mrs. Mueller. Well, as soon as we walked in, the first thing I noticed was a bunch of colorful butterflies, all dead and pinned and mounted in frames along the entrance corridor. For some reason that really made me sick see a lot of dead mounted multi-colored butterflies. Other kids didn't seem to notice or care, but this really poisoned my view of this so called "museum." So we are about to tour a museum filled with dead animals? What other horrors would this place have in store?
Well, I never gave the museum a chance. I promptly turned around and without saying anything decided to leave and walk home. At age four. And home was over three miles away in Monterey. But I knew my way back - it was pretty easy really. I didn't ask permission to leave; I just left.
So I depart from the museum. I knew my way home. My family doctor's office (Dr. Richard Still) was also on Central (Central Medical Clinic) and I had been up and down that corridor in a car many many times. So I figured walking home to Monterey would be a piece of cake. So I head down Central until it turned into Lighthouse. I continued down Lighthouse, past all the stores and businesses and restaurants on both sides of Lighthouse, then past the Presidio / Defense Language Institute frontage property on the right, then past the Coast Guard Pier on the left. At this point I believe the road forked right into Pacific (before the tunnel project was built as part of urban renewal). So I just continued down Pacific, seeing Fishermans's Wharf #2 on the left, continue past Del Monte, then past the San Carlos Hotel on Pacific & Franklin (a Mariott is there now), continuing on my way home to Peter's Gate on Alameda between Pacific & Munras. I do remember passing my father's office at The Herald on Pacific & Jefferson and remember thinking that that I didn't want to bother him. I just wanted to go home and at this point it was less than a mile away. So I just kept moving.
As it turned out, total distance from the Pacific Grove Museum of Natural History to my parents' house was a little more than three miles. It was a surprisingly direct and easy route home and I could almost do it on automatic pilot. The worst part was that some of the roads did not have sidewalks and at times I was walking on the shoulder or alongside the road in the dirt. But Monterey in the mid 50's was less populated and auto traffic was not congested, especially in mid-day.
And I almost made it all the way back home to my neighborhood in Peter's Gate on Alameda (between Pacific & Munras). But when I was about 400 yards from my parents' house, my father's secretary Pat spotted me as she was driving by. At that point I was right across from Whispering Pines Park and about to cross the street to walk up Alameda. Pat (I don't remember her last name) didn't even know I was missing but recognized me; she has been on a lunch break or appointment or something and was on her way back to work when she spotted me. I also recognized her so I agreed to accept a ride. And of course meanwhile an "all-points bulletin" had been issued and everybody was scrambling to find me. They were apparently looking for me all over Pacific Grove but never thought to search along the most direct route I had to get back home.
But it all ended well and as far as I know, my parents didn't seem to blame Mrs. Mueller, or at least I didn't directly see them getting upset and casting any blame. They were just so relieved that I was safe. I returned to Mrs Mueller's class the next school day as if nothing had happened. And maybe they thought it would be more disruptive to my overall nursery school experience to make a big deal out of what had happened. Plus maybe my parents knew that it is hard to keep track of a willful child in a group of ten other four and five year old kids, who is determined to sneak out without any advance warning, or complaining, or crying, etc.
In looking at Google maps, it appears that the walk home was a little over three miles long - not bad for a four-year-old! I remember later being told by my parents that the whole incident was representative of my independent personality as a young child. I did what I wanted to do. But to me it was just a natural reaction to seeing a bunch of dead mounted butterflies. I was surprised that other kids weren't equally disgusted. I did not want to be at that museum any more, so I got the hell out of there!
I still don't understand why pretty multi-colored butterflies are killed and mounted in frames. It still disgusts me to this day. We always had pets since I was a baby and at that time we had a dog, a cat, and a coop full of egg-laying "pet" chickens in the back yard. To me, killing and mounting pretty butterflies was simply a form of animal cruelty.
Addendum: I recently connected with Mrs. Mueller's daughter Demi Briscoe, who today lives in Carmel Valley. (Demi's mother, our teacher Mrs. Beverly Mueller, passed away in 2001). And Demi remembers that "runaway" incident very well - Demi was in 5th or 6th grade at the time. It caused quite a bit of upset with her parents. But I did return to Mrs. Mueller's nursery school the very next school day as if nothing had happened, and continued to attend nursery school there for at least another year! And eventually this incident became a favorite story my parents would tell friends about my early childhood. ~ DM
One day our nursery school class took a field trip to the Pacific Grove Museum of Natural History on Forest and Central. There were maybe ten of us kids, accompanied I believe by one adult, Mrs. Mueller. Well, as soon as we walked in, the first thing I noticed was a bunch of colorful butterflies, all dead and pinned and mounted in frames along the entrance corridor. For some reason that really made me sick see a lot of dead mounted multi-colored butterflies. Other kids didn't seem to notice or care, but this really poisoned my view of this so called "museum." So we are about to tour a museum filled with dead animals? What other horrors would this place have in store?
Well, I never gave the museum a chance. I promptly turned around and without saying anything decided to leave and walk home. At age four. And home was over three miles away in Monterey. But I knew my way back - it was pretty easy really. I didn't ask permission to leave; I just left.
So I depart from the museum. I knew my way home. My family doctor's office (Dr. Richard Still) was also on Central (Central Medical Clinic) and I had been up and down that corridor in a car many many times. So I figured walking home to Monterey would be a piece of cake. So I head down Central until it turned into Lighthouse. I continued down Lighthouse, past all the stores and businesses and restaurants on both sides of Lighthouse, then past the Presidio / Defense Language Institute frontage property on the right, then past the Coast Guard Pier on the left. At this point I believe the road forked right into Pacific (before the tunnel project was built as part of urban renewal). So I just continued down Pacific, seeing Fishermans's Wharf #2 on the left, continue past Del Monte, then past the San Carlos Hotel on Pacific & Franklin (a Mariott is there now), continuing on my way home to Peter's Gate on Alameda between Pacific & Munras. I do remember passing my father's office at The Herald on Pacific & Jefferson and remember thinking that that I didn't want to bother him. I just wanted to go home and at this point it was less than a mile away. So I just kept moving.
As it turned out, total distance from the Pacific Grove Museum of Natural History to my parents' house was a little more than three miles. It was a surprisingly direct and easy route home and I could almost do it on automatic pilot. The worst part was that some of the roads did not have sidewalks and at times I was walking on the shoulder or alongside the road in the dirt. But Monterey in the mid 50's was less populated and auto traffic was not congested, especially in mid-day.
And I almost made it all the way back home to my neighborhood in Peter's Gate on Alameda (between Pacific & Munras). But when I was about 400 yards from my parents' house, my father's secretary Pat spotted me as she was driving by. At that point I was right across from Whispering Pines Park and about to cross the street to walk up Alameda. Pat (I don't remember her last name) didn't even know I was missing but recognized me; she has been on a lunch break or appointment or something and was on her way back to work when she spotted me. I also recognized her so I agreed to accept a ride. And of course meanwhile an "all-points bulletin" had been issued and everybody was scrambling to find me. They were apparently looking for me all over Pacific Grove but never thought to search along the most direct route I had to get back home.
But it all ended well and as far as I know, my parents didn't seem to blame Mrs. Mueller, or at least I didn't directly see them getting upset and casting any blame. They were just so relieved that I was safe. I returned to Mrs Mueller's class the next school day as if nothing had happened. And maybe they thought it would be more disruptive to my overall nursery school experience to make a big deal out of what had happened. Plus maybe my parents knew that it is hard to keep track of a willful child in a group of ten other four and five year old kids, who is determined to sneak out without any advance warning, or complaining, or crying, etc.
In looking at Google maps, it appears that the walk home was a little over three miles long - not bad for a four-year-old! I remember later being told by my parents that the whole incident was representative of my independent personality as a young child. I did what I wanted to do. But to me it was just a natural reaction to seeing a bunch of dead mounted butterflies. I was surprised that other kids weren't equally disgusted. I did not want to be at that museum any more, so I got the hell out of there!
I still don't understand why pretty multi-colored butterflies are killed and mounted in frames. It still disgusts me to this day. We always had pets since I was a baby and at that time we had a dog, a cat, and a coop full of egg-laying "pet" chickens in the back yard. To me, killing and mounting pretty butterflies was simply a form of animal cruelty.
Addendum: I recently connected with Mrs. Mueller's daughter Demi Briscoe, who today lives in Carmel Valley. (Demi's mother, our teacher Mrs. Beverly Mueller, passed away in 2001). And Demi remembers that "runaway" incident very well - Demi was in 5th or 6th grade at the time. It caused quite a bit of upset with her parents. But I did return to Mrs. Mueller's nursery school the very next school day as if nothing had happened, and continued to attend nursery school there for at least another year!
